Who Are the Real Animals?
PETA is calling for an end to this cruelty that masquerades as sport.
- www.peta.org Monday, May 5, 2008
During this past weekend’s 134th running of the Kentucky Derby, tragedy struck, as second place finisher Eight Belles collapsed to the dirt track AFTER the race. The filly broke bones in both front legs and euthanasia was performed on the animal right then and there.
I have long enjoyed watching racing and I have always felt that horses are amazingly beautiful animals. I also believe after horses like Barbaro and Eight Belles have met the same untimely fate, the "sport of kings" should continue looking into options that will eliminate such disastrous events. Several tracks in the U.S. are featuring synthetic surfaces that are far more easier on horses legs with less chance of sustained injuries to the animals.
So while I share many people’s sentiments on bettering the sport, making it safer for both “animal” and jockey, I certainly DO NOT share the sentiments of the radical sociopaths of PETA who’s Nazi-like tactics continue to blur the facts, make outrageous claims, and bully those who refuse to share in their beliefs. I logged onto PETA’s website this morning, knowing I’d be in for a load of tear jerking and acrimonious ridicule, along with uninformed, retard diatribe. Oh yeah, I got it all…
With the shock of Barbaro's death after the 2006 Preakness still fresh in their minds, the Kentucky Derby crowd saw for themselves the sordid truth about what racing means for the horses involved last night, as the filly Eight Belles was killed after collapsing on the track.
PETA is calling for the immediate suspension of jockey Gabriel Saez—who whipped Eight Belles mercilessly as she came down the final stretch, no doubt in agony from two front legs that were about to snap. While the trainers, jockeys, and owners may weep their crocodile tears today over Eight Belles' euthanasia, they will be back on the track tomorrow, putting other horses at risk. Despite the wealth associated with thoroughbred racing, for the horses—most of whom end up broken, cast off, or sent to Europe to be killed for the dinner table—it's a dirty business and no better than dogfighting.
This is just brutally ignorant journalism, yanking on the heartstrings of this organizations bleeding heart martyrs of political correctness. First off, Eight Belles was not “killed” on the track, she was euthanized. It is a horrible thing to happen, but by far the most humane thing to do for the “animal.” In fact, PETA performs euthanasia on thousands of animals each year and on their website it is referred to as the “compassionate option.”
Secondly, how does the author KNOW so emphatically that the horse was in agony as her legs were about to snap? Is he or she an animal psychic? The filly collapsed AFTER the race and racing experts, veterinarians, and jockey Gabriel Saez have all said that without question if the horse was injured BEFORE the finish line she would have fallen face first into a heep, throwing it’s rider and most likely causing a devastating multi-horse pileup. A thoroughbred’s massive weight would simply NOT allow the filly to be able to continue running and finish the race if it’s legs’s were already broken – and that is a fact.
I have talked to race horse owners and riders and they have always said that whipping does not injure the “animals.” They are born and bred to race and know it is a signal from the jockey to kick it into gear. The PETA henchmen are claiming that the horse was beaten so severely that it continued to run even though the pain was great. People, if that horse felt tremendous pain during the run, it would have pulled up lame. That’s what horses do.
To say the owners and trainers weep crocodile tears is simply the uttering of an agenda ridden, out of touch with reality imbecile. These people love the animals and it is brutally tragic when something of this nature occurs. But then to claim that the sport of horse racing is no better than dog fighting is truly the rantings of a fanatical lunatic. In a dog fight, the animals are bred to KILL. A bloody and horrifying death is the intended final result. To compare the two as equals clearly illustrates the bizarre rationalization that PETA uses to get the public to sympathize with its dangerous and psychotic ramblings.
The following are some of the “for real” ramblings of the brain washed brethren on one of PETA’s web forums…
- Last time a checked gambling was a sin and horses and other animals should not be used as part of humans sinful behavior.
- The black football star goes to prison for electrocuting dogs. The white race horse owners get condolence letters when they murder their filly on national TV.
- How stupid is horse racing? Why don't we make people wear harnesses and be whipped because they're not going fast enough? Maybe THEN people will listen!
- Dog fighting has a reputation of being violent and associated with other crimes so it is an easier argument for people to accept its brutality.
- I was driven to tears when I learned about this beautiful animal being abused to death for profit.
- God, this is horrible. Whom can we contact to support the suspension of the jockey, Saez?
- Shame on jockey Gabriel Saez—for whipping poor Eight Belles mercilessly as she came down the final stretch, no doubt in agony from two front legs that were about to snap. Shame on the Racing Industry! Get them Peta!
- How awful!!! I am so sad about this!! I want this greedy, despicable jockey brought up on charges!! Scum of the earth!!
- You know I think it's a shame that it's okay to race a horse until he collapse and die but michael vick had to do time for a crime he didn't commit.
Sure as hell looks like a few Falcon’s fans are lobbying for Vick to get his ass in the Atlanta back field again if you ask me.
The psychos of PETA have made it public that they DEMAND Jockey, Gabriel Sanchez to be suspended indefinitely. This was said in today’s AP article about the matter:
PETA faxed a letter Sunday to Kentucky's racing authority claiming the filly was "doubtlessly injured before the finish" and asked that Saez be suspended while Eight Belles' death is investigated. "What we really want to know, did he feel anything along the way?" PETA spokeswoman Kathy Guillermo said. "If he didn't then we can probably blame the fact that they're allowed to whip the horses mercilessly." Guillermo said if Saez is found at fault, the group wants the second-place prize of $400,000 won by Eight Belles to be revoked.
I ask you - who the hell are these people to make such demands? They are a self-imposed animal terrorist group who thinks they are the governing body for creatures of the earth. Their twisted beliefs and irreprehensible rhetoric has lead to violent actions all over the world, and have even condemned groups like the American Cancer Society and Cerebral Palsy amongst others for testing life saving drugs on animals. Many bitch and protest that meat and milk is being served in our school lunch programs. These are the same insaniacs that have bitched about Detroit Red Wing fans slinging deceased octopi to the ice during playoff games and are now fiercely complaining that a “real life” monkey was used to play Chim Chim in the new Speed Racer Movie.
I think what really puts most “normal” people off is that PETA believes that animals are on the same level as human beings. Please PETA, protect the animals that really do need the help and try to be even half as noble as you claim. Now just shut the f@ck up as I enjoy my juicy, medium to rare cheeseburger on my leather recliner. What a bitch, huh?
I hold my finger middle high with defiance until tomorrow,

Do you think the average American reads this (PETA article) crap and says "you know, they must be right"? I doubt it ........ then again my faith in the average American having common sense is slipping every day.
Horse racing, slug racing, frog racing, dog fights - they are all on the same level. Except cock fights - that's on a level alllll it's own. oh, you thought I meant roosters... nevermind

Re: Who Are the Real Animals?
I'm with you Zman~Thoroghbreds are bred to race, it's what they do. Although, running a 2-3 year old is definitely riskier than waiting until they are 4-5 years old when they are stornger & more developed.
Having been in the horse industry for the majority of my childhood and well into my college years, I've heard it all from the bleeding hearts. They really should worry about much more important issues at hand, like the safety and well being of our kids, disease, war, etc.
As for the whipping, to a horse, it feels like you are swatting a fly off his ass!

Re: Who Are the Real Animals?
Zman you are the sick and twisted one in this case. Horse racing is a voilent and cruel hoax and needs to stop this instance. That jockey and the owners damned well knew there was a problem and should be sent to prison for murder. Assholes like you who mock Peta have zero understanding of what it is about. It is you who should be locked in a cage and have electrodes placed on your genitalia for experimantal purposes.
The whole lot of you here are sickening.

Re: Who Are the Real Animals?
I read some of the same crap in this morning's paper. The trainer and owner were more devastated than anyone. There is a risk with everything we do, especially competitive sports. All athletes are exposed to serious injury or death.
PETA euthanizes twice as many animals as most Human Societies because they don't know what the hell they're doing.
People for Eating Tasty Animals? I love animals, they're delicious? PETA is a type of bread you fill with tasty meat for lunch.
They're just like the tree-huggers that drive they're expensive cars to the local spotted-owl meetings.
Sorry for the pun, but PETA, get off your high horse!

HELL what are they talking about, my wife has been wearing a harness a long time and I whip her if she isn't going fast enough.....know what I mean
GO RED WINGS,,,,sorry about your Rangers Z

"That jockey and the owners damned well knew there was a problem and should be sent to prison for murder."
Now THIS is what I'm talking about. You can only be committed for murder on another human being. The psychos don't seem to get this fact.
Thanx, Aqualung. The Penguins played an unusually good brand of defense that they're not known for and held the Rangers power play to zilch. Jagr and Lunqvist were spectacular.
Kitty Canine - definitely a poofter, not a woman.

Re: Who Are the Real Animals?
Kitty, I'm sorry that you feel that way, but, as is every extremist group and movement in history, PETA is a disconnected, shortsighted, and confused group. They are more harmful in some of their own actions, than huge numbers of the people whom they blame for every one of the planet's ills. That poor horse, who is due sympathy for its suffering, was no worse off than any one of the hundreds of billions of animals living on the planet, wild, domestic, or even food.
I think that the one true proof that PETA is just lost, is that they staunchly oppose ownership of pets. They will even euthanize animals, rather than let them enter the servitude and suffering of being a pet.
Pet ownership isn't always nice, lots of dogs are staked to a house, and owned just to bark at strangers. On the other hand, if you add up all of the years of virtual paradise that my many pets have suffered through, I think that in general, they were better off here, than dead and in a dumpster. Beyond what was good for them, they have been good for us. (granted, my needs are NOTHING to consider, since it is all about the animals.)
Ironically enough, every one of my pets has been a rescue, many of them straight off of the streets. The idea that people could seriously tell me that these animals were better off dead is so truly ludicrous that it defies rational thought.
PETA lives for its enemies, and it fights against them, but other than this constant battle against the enemies of the animals, I've very rarely seen a case where they actually helped animals.
The humane society, and dozens of great volunteers, brought the entire population of a flooded shelter here to my town, and supplied us with a cat that we already love and cherish, one that will be with us for many pleasant years.
PETA might have gassed it, and ended its suffering.

Saw Ironman with the kid and we went nuts.
What a great comic book movie. The effects were amazing.
And, I grilled up a few porterhouses last night and a couple of Honduran cigars for dessert. The weather has finally kicked into gear here.

Re: Who Are the Real Animals?
I realize that I am arguing logic against a gut emotion, but really, a person has at least got to try. Logic might have ended the holocaust, prevented the civil war, and changed the path of hundreds of pivotal events throughout human history. Conflicts that involve deeply held feelings and convictions aren't usually solved with logic, though, and because of that, we are left with nothing but conflict, and the losers are always the huge masses that are caught in the conflicts. I'm not even certain that in many of those conflicts, you can say that there was a winner. There weren't a whole lot of identifiable winners in the struggle with apartheid, or the civil war.

She needs to go watch the Disney movie "The Lion King" and learn all about the "Circle of Life". It should just about be her speed too.

Re: Who Are the Real Animals?
Former Husky football player Curtis Williams, who was paralyzed below the neck after an injury in the 2000 UW-Stanford game, died of natural causes May 4 at the home of his brother in Fresno, Calif. It is the first death of a student-athlete in UW history due to a sports-related injury.
This young man loved to play football. He made the choice to play, understanding the risks.
Thoroughbreds love to run.
Horses don't reason well, but they usually don't do things they don't want to do. Humans make choices for them.
These are trainers and breeders that have been doing this for a long time and love their animals.
These animals are not exploited and are treated very well.
If they didn't love to run fast, they wouldn't be running in the Kentucky Derby.

PETA are definitely out of line here. They're just being tools, and are latching on for their own gain. Those in the racing industry know nothing wrong was done. If they bend and suspend the jockey they're bigger idiots than PETA.

Zman, something tells me that you knew this topic would get comments - especially from a psycho or two. (And I don't mean you Robert. Ascebic Twat and psycho are very different!) LMFAO!
Amazing how Peta uses this prestigious and historic event to grand stand for all the world to see. You think if a dog was killed godforbid at some dog track in Florida that they'd make a federal case out of this?
It's really hard to understand what motivates these bizarros sometimes.

Many of these blogger comments are immature and disgraceful in wake of this tragedy. First off Mr. Zman, it is none of yours or anyone's concern about my sexual preference. Please grow up, sir.
It is hard to believe that you don't people see the horror of what these breeders and trainers do and what torture it is for these beautiful animals. That poor horse was pushed past its limits on saturday and ended up dying in pain and in vain.
I am a proud and long standing activist for animal rights and it is the ignorant sorts as you people whom I must educate and clash with daily.
Please all of you, grow the hell up and see what is happening here.
I invite you to www.peta.org. A enlightening would help you all. Especially the foul and disgusting writer of this blog column.

Race horses, especially at this level, enjoy care and handling that most of us would love. They are groomed daily, fed a well planned diet, get plenty of water, live in regurally (sp) mucked out stalls, have vets checking on them on a regular basis, get plenty of exercise, etc, etc, etc. These animals are PAMPERED beyond belief. Turn them out in a pasture and what do they do??? THEY RUN LIKE HELL. It it what they are born and bred and love to do.
Are there unscrupulous (again sp) trainers? Well hell yeah. But by in large these animals live a life of luxury and are pampered and are loved.

Re: Who Are the Real Animals?
Kitty, who are you, and why are you here? I'm not ignorant, and you may be clashing with us, but you aren't even remotely trying to educate us. All you've is call us names, and toss out some some seriously weird commentary. I have no need to grow up, I've been around long enough that I know you and your type like a passage from the bible. Rhetoric, adjectives, emotional statements, none of this has any meaning, and it won't teach a single person anything, all it will do is drag irrational thoughts and reactions out of the people who have to listen to it.
I don't need to defend Tommy, but let me remind you, that this is not your blog, it is his, and he is here to discuss current events, in his own, Tommyesqe way. This is here, for him. If you don't want to read these things, leave, don't come in here and call him a sick and twisted asshole. That is just poor manners, and exactly what I most expect from a zealot like you appear to be.
I assure you, I have nothing at all that I could learn from PETA. I have no emotional dog in that fight, and having worked as a farmer, a butcher, a vet's assistant, animal aid worker, and had every possible experience with both people and animals that a person could have, There is not a single person at that site that has the wide ranging knowledge that I do. When was the last time you amputated a dog's leg to save it's life? Dressed a turkey for dinner? Turned a deer into a months worth of dinner?
Let me teach you how.

briandg, good summary of the Lion King. That is exactly what my 8 year old son got out of it too. Maybe PETA will start boycotting Disney now. ROTFLMFAO

OK, so we have a gay animal rights activist muddying up my house. Now it's not a big deal that he's gay, it's just that we have a couple of social issues going on here it just makes it all the wackier.
Yes, Somnus, I have been quiet. doing the "give 'em enough rope" theory. At least Kitty and my wife are on the same page with my foul and disgustingness.
And don't you guys love the name, Kitty Canine? I wonder if his friends Tortise Hare and Lion Antelope will show and join the fray.
Briandg brings up a point I often make when trolls come a knockin, and that is it's my house where I can slaughter a hog or grill up some Flintstone ribs if I desire.
Kitty, with each post you are proving our point that youz people is nuckin' futs.

Sometimes I feel that I'm just another Zman who had the good fortune, or not so damned good fortune, to have been born in God's country, and then dumped into southwest Missouri, home of the highest meth production in the entire freakin nation. We don't abuse animals here, cuz we gots plenty o wimmen to do it to.

Dear Kitty,
Your pride is blinding you. Your arrogance has to let us know how long you've been fighting the good fight. Your judgmental labels will get you nowhere on this blog(trust me, I tried it). Your ego lets you believe you will educate us. And your fears have you thinking you must clash with others to communicate.
Your life of selfless commitment and service is supposed to bring joy and happiness. I'm not feeling it from you...

Now that's funny. Nicole is the LAST person who would ever be my lackey! Sorry to disillusion you but I only go so far as a mastermind. As far as I know, with the RSS feeds and google, the blog and it's subject matter get into hyperspace immediately. And, as far as I can tell this isn't a prank and we have an real live, authentic wingnut on our hands.
The same thing happened when I published my Planet Zman blog on Go Daddy's server (before I started the JR blog.) Psychos came out of the woodwork and I would wonder "How the hell did they find this place?"
I hate to poke a hole in your conspiracy theory, but at least I'll admit one thing to the blog audience -

Re: Who Are the Real Animals?
The Eight Belles injury and subsequent euthanaasia was said. Plain and simple.
With that said, horse racing is an entertaining thing to watch. What bothers me is the ridiculous pomp and circumstance behind these "big" races and all the idiots wearing their hats and costumes and partying. It cheapens the whole thing for me. A guy I went to college with was named the "Chief Party Officer" for the Derby (http://www.wave3.com/global/story.asp?s=8204092). Its just stupid.

Re: Who Are the Real Animals?
A Masterpiece, Tommy. You sure lured an interesting creature out
of the woodwork this time - Kitty Canine.
As KC suggested I went to peta.org, searching for anyone blogging
by that name. Went through thirty-four pages -over 100 bloggers,
most lamenting the demise of the filly. The convoluted logic was
an unbelievable journey of lament, culminating usually in a plea for
the abolition of horse racing and the incarceration of the jockey and
a stripping of the $400,000 the filly earned by her second place finish.
And, so many ended their post with an embellishment of the same
Martin Luther King Jr.'s quotation about "the true worth of a man..."
The few bloggers who railed against the logic of the Peta folks were
excoriated, cursed, vilified, and not so politely told to "get the hell off
this blog." Several of the diatribes were over 500 words in length.
Their admonition was clear: naysay against the PETA principles at your
own risk.
And, NO, I never did come across any of the bloggers by the appellation
Kitty Canine.

Re: Who Are the Real Animals?
Oh foul and disgusting one (that's you Zman). It appears you really stirred up a pile of horsesh@t with this one.
While I am truly saddened to hear of this beautiful animal's tragic misfortune, people like Cat Dog (or whatever he, she, or it calls itself) do not understand that it was just that; tragic misfortune. The odds are high that had that filly shortened or lengthened her stride just a bit, or veered 6" over to one side or the other, she would not have hit the uneven patch of the dirt track that led to her demise.
I'm sorry, it was just bad luck, and not vile cruelty that caused this to happen. Bad luck or good luck can strike anyone or any creature at any time. It's a tragedy when someone walking through the forest gets a snakebite and dies. That does not mean we have to immediately do away with the cruel and violent activity of walking through a forest.
I'm sorry KC, but your argument just doesn't hold water.

Re: Who Are the Real Animals?
I will say one thing for PETA, and only one, in defense of them.
There is a lot of plain damned cruelty that is unnecessary, and ridiculous, that should not be tolerated, and should not happen at all, period. People never fail to amaze me at what levels they will sink to, without even thinking about what they are doing, but it is not necessarily limited to animals.
The egg farms here kill their chickens after a certain period of production, to replace them. Kooks from somewhere were filming the procedure, and caught them tossing live chickens into a dumpster, thousands of them. They are supposed to be gassed, and dead, but the people were just going through the motions of running them through the "box" and not leaving them in long enough to even knock them out.
You know, that's just plain wrong, and the company was fined. That's one for PETA, an entire dumpster full of chickens that died terribly and pointlessly, got their day in the public eye.
It all reminds me of a story my mother told me about one of my uncles. He used to run coyotes with greyhounds, along with one of his buddies. When his buddy was finished with a dog, he would take a hammer with him, and after the hunt, he'd club the thing, and leave it for the buzzards. Well, I doubt the things died quietly after a whack on the head, and I always wondered, since the asshole was already carrying a pistol for the coyotes, why not SHOOT it?
PETA, IMO, is not necessarily wrong, just demented and "wrong." Unfortunately, since the serious animal cruelty is mostly on a private and individual basis, their work is mostly futile. Maybe the realization that they are quite frankly, hamstrung by the diffuseness of their target, is what makes them so blasted crazy.
